Beavers Set to Battle Warriors Saturday

BACK-TO-BACK AT HOME: This is the first season the Beavers have opened the year with back-to-back home games since 2005 (Portland State & Boise State). OSU was scheduled to play Nicholls State and Wisconsin at home to open last season, but Hurricane Isaac forced travel issues for NSU and thus the game was moved to the end of the year. Following Saturday’s game, OSU has just one home game (Sept. 28 vs. Colorado) in a six-week span (1 bye).

THE SERIES: The series dates back to 1923 with OSU holding a 5-3 advantage. The two programs played twice in the Pineapple Bowl (1940 & ’49). Hawai’i ventured to Corvallis for the first time in 2008, the last meeting in the series, with the Beavers prevailing 45-7 in what was former running back Jacquizz Rodgers’ first home game – 110 yards and two touchdowns. Current volunteer assistant coach Lyle Moevao passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Current Beaver volunteer assistant Aaron Nichols (from Honolulu) played in the game (WR) as did graduate assistant coach Keaton Kristick, making three tackles from his starting linebacker spot. The Beavers starting lineup in the last meeting was loaded with players who went onto to the NFL – WR Sammie Stroughter (7th RD pick Buccaneers); LT Andy Levitre (2nd RD/Bills); RT Mike Remmers (FA/Broncos); RB Jacquizz Rodgers (5th RD/Falcons); FL James Rodgers (FA/Falcons); LE Victor Butler (4th RD/Cowboys); RT Stephen Paea (2nd RD/Bears); RE Slade Norris (4th RD/Raiders); SLB Keaton Kristick (FA/49ers); CB Keenan Lewis (3rd RD/Steelers); S Al Afalava (6th RD/Bears); CB Brandon Hughes (5th RD/Chargers) – all of those players started in the game. In addition, the following players came off the bench: S/LB Cameron Collins (FA/Dolphins); P Johnny Hekker (FA/Rams); CB Brandon Hardin (3rd RD/Bears); S Suaesi Tuimaunei (FA/Falcons); and DE Gabe Miller (5th RD/Chiefs).
