Oregon State Police is continuing the investigation into the cause of Sunday morning's single vehicle fatal traffic crash into the Wilson River off Highway about six miles east of Tillamook. The crash resulted in the death of a Tillamook man and non-life threatening injuries to the vehicle's driver.
According to Sergeant Greg Plummer, a 2010 Jeep Patriot sport utility vehicle driven by Juan Getcemani de la Torre, age 23, from Tillamook, was westbound on Highway 6 near milepost 6 when it left the highway, struck a tree and rolled down an embankment to where it came to rest on its top submerged in Wilson River.
Two anglers heard the crash and went to help while calling 9-1-1. They saw the Jeep's tires exposed out of the water and helped while the driver got out of the vehicle.
The driver was transported by ground ambulance to Tillamook Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Passenger Atilano Vrgas Sanchez, age 43, from Tillamook, was transported by ambulance to Tillamook Regional Medical Center where he later died as a result of the crash. The cause of death determination is pending.
Investigation shows both occupants were using safety restraints and the car's airbags deployed during the crash.
