Hillsboro Police conducted a traffic stop Friday at 9:40 p.m. at 13th Avenue and Maple Street. The vehicle was a 1992 Honda Accord.
While contacting the four people in the car, a man in his late 20s pulled a semiautomatic handgun and began firing at one of the officers. The officer was able to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
A back-up officer fired at and hit the suspect. He was taken to Emanuel Hospital where he died.
The two officers involved were not seriously injured, however the officer who was immediately fired upon was treated for minor injuries sustained during the incident. She was treated and released at a local hospital.
The other three occupants of the vehicle were detained by Hillsboro police pending further investigation.
This case remains under investigation by Hillsboro police detectives and the Washington County Major Crimes Team.
The name of the man who was killed has not been released.
