Transient steals Model A, drives into river

A fully remodeled 1930 Ford Model A was badly damaged after a transient stole it and crashed it into the Crooked River along Highway 27 south of Prineville.

34-year-old Erik Halpin swam to shore after wrecking the car.  He was flown via helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

The owner of the car had reported it stolen Sunday morning.  Prineville Police were taking a report on the vehicle when witnesses saw Halpin driving it.

Halpin is charged with theft and driving under the influence.  He also has an outstanding warrant in Klamath County for failure to appear.
